2. Classical Music on Sunday

- Carl Maria von Weber: „Der Freischütz“ – Overture
- Carl Maria von Weber: Bassoon Concerto F major Op. 75
- Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5 D minor Op. 107, MWV N 15 ”Reformation”
- Hyunjin Kim, Bassoon
- Simon Gaudenz, conductor
Carl Maria von Weber’s Bassoon Concerto, which combines classical forms with early Romanticism, begins radiantly and powerfully. Weber endowed this work with a wealth of wonderful melodies, which are sung in magnificent, sweeping arcs by the deep, warm voice of the bassoon. Subtle echoes of Mozart can be heard. Rarely can the bassoon present itself as a solo instrument with such charm and esprit as in this piece. It is played by Hyunjin Kim, our orchestra’s principal bassoonist.
We conclude this »Classical Music on Sunday« with a sublime piece. In his Reformation Symphony, Felix Mendelssohn incorporated Gregorian motifs and Protestant hymns, interweaving sonata form and chorale variations.
The concert is conducted by OPUS KLASSIK award winner Simon Gaudenz. He has been General Music Director of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018 and inspires audiences at home and abroad with his orchestra and innovative programmes. He has also worked with leading ensembles such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestre National de France, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Oslo Philharmonic.
